The ACSOM-Waterloo partnership moves to enrollment, offering Canadian science students a non-profit, physician-taught path to medicine without the MCAT.
PORTSMOUTH, DOMINICA, October 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) today announced that University of Waterloo students have enrolled at ACSOM for the Fall 2026 term, marking the first cohort to arrive under the ACSOM-Waterloo 3+4 Medical Pathway Program signed in March 2025. That Waterloo students represent approximately 10% of the Fall 2026 class in the program’s first year speaks to the demand among high-achieving Canadian science students for a credible, affordable path into medicine.
HOW THE 3+4 PATHWAY WORKS
Under the agreement, Faculty of Science students at the University of Waterloo complete three years of undergraduate study, then transition directly into ACSOM’s MD program. The first year of medical school at ACSOM earns academic credit at both institutions: students who complete it successfully are awarded an Honours Bachelor of Science by the University of Waterloo. The remaining three years at ACSOM culminate in a Doctor of Medicine degree.
Students apply to the pathway in their second year at Waterloo through the Conditional Admissions to Medical School (CAMS) program, which provides priority interview consideration at ACSOM. No MCAT is required for admission through this pathway. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 across all three undergraduate years.
A NON-PROFIT OPTION FOR CANADIAN STUDENTS
Canada produces too few medical school seats for the number of qualified applicants each year. Many students who cannot secure a domestic placement face a choice between deferring their medical ambitions or enrolling at offshore schools, where for-profit models routinely push total costs well above $500,000. ACSOM offers a different proposition.
As a non-profit institution operating on a government-supported campus provided by the Commonwealth of Dominica, ACSOM holds four-year tuition and fees to $238,000, significantly below the offshore average. Courses are taught in small groups of approximately 10 students, led by practicing physicians rather than lecturers. Scholarships and financial aid are available to eligible students, and ACSOM has arranged private lending at interest rates of 9.8% or below.
STUDENTS VISIT CAMPUS BEFORE ENROLLING
Prior to the Fall 2026 intake, University of Waterloo students visited the ACSOM campus in Dominica, meeting faculty and current students and experiencing the academic environment firsthand. The campus visit program reflects ACSOM’s commitment to informed enrollment: students who arrive have already seen where they will spend two years of their medical education.
“I believe the truly unique aspect of ACSOM, which all of our students benefit from, is that all of their case studies and theory are taught by physicians, ensuring that every aspect of their training is preparing them to approach each challenge from a medical perspective.”
– Carey James, MBA, President, American Canadian School of Medicine
ACSOM holds five-year full accreditation from IAAR and provisional accreditation from ACCM, both recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). Canadian students are eligible to pursue MCCQE Part I, the NAC OSCE, and participation in the CaRMS match.
